“Where is the prince?” the housekeeper demanded. “And why is Miss Ramon leaving? That was Miss Ramon, wasn’t it?”

Melody debated how she was going to disable the housekeeper. Knocking the poor woman unconscious would be dangerously brutal. She snatched off her night-vision goggles, trying to think. It was one thing to bash the prince and his secretary over the head, but she drew the line at battering little old ladies.

She swung around to face the housekeeper, using her foot to close the front door behind her. With the door shut, there was only enough moonlight filtering through the skylight to discern the general outline of the housekeeper’s body, and her face was no more than a shadowy oval with two dark spots for eyes. Good. Aliya would be having just as much difficulty seeing what Melody was up to.

Chloroform shouldn’t do any lasting damage, Melody decided, even to a woman of Aliya’s age. She slipped her hand into the small pocket on the side of her briefcase. Her fingers encountered the slim, cylindrical shape of another vial of chloroform and the folded washcloth, tucked inside its plastic carrying bag.

“I haven’t seen the prince,” she said, responding to the least difficult of Aliya’s questions. “I was downstairs with Ms. Ramon. Isn’t the prince in his bedroom?”

“I don’t know. I thought he was waiting for the actress down here.” The way Aliya said “the actress” suggested that Jacyntha came somewhere slightly lower than rat droppings on the housekeeper’s scale of approval. “Anyway, why has she gone outside?”

Truth came to Melody’s rescue. “Ms. Ramon is frightened of the dark. She was feeling very claustrophobic. She’s gone to sit in my car.”

Melody had managed to snap the twist-top off the vial of chloroform and tip the contents onto the washcloth. She needed to act fast, or the potency would dissipate.

Aliya nodded. “Perhaps it would be safest if you joined her, miss.”

“You’re right. It would be a lot safer.” Melody grabbed the woman and pressed the chloroform-soaked cloth over her mouth and nose. “Sorry, Aliya,” she murmured. “I’m really sorry.”

The housekeeper had time for no more than one astonished moan of protest before her body slumped. Melody caught her as she began to fall and laid her down neatly on the floor, making sure that her skirt was pulled down over her legs and that her veil still covered her head and shoulders. Could you show respect to somebody you’d just chloroformed against her will? she wondered.

Three down and four to go. The cook was another older lady, so presumably didn’t pose too much threat, but Tommy’s tutor and the two professional bodyguards remained potentially formidable obstacles. A man’s voice called out in Arabic, and another masculine voice responded, immediately followed by the sound of running feet, still all on the second level where the bedrooms were located. It was frustrating not to be able to understand what they were saying. It was also strange that nobody had thought to check the generator. On the
